Why am I unable to view a document?

A number of documents available on the International Save the Children Alliance websites are provided in Adobe Acrobat (.pdf), Microsoft Word (.doc), Excel (.xls) or Powerpoint (.ppt) format. If you do not have the right software installed on your computer, you will require a special viewer to read them. They are available free of charge:

Adobe Acrobat PDF files

Download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader viewer from the Adobe website

 Adobe Acrobat Viewer logo.

Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files

Download free viewers from the Microsoft website

 Microsoft Officer viewer logo.

Please download documents and save them on your computer before opening them. To do this, right-click on the link to the document and click 'Save Target As..'. Then you can open the files from your local setting, rather than direct from the website, which will be quicker for future use and can avoid browser problems.

If you have connection problems and are completely unable to download a document, we can email compressed versions of these files directly to you. Send me a document.....

It is taking forever to view a document: is this normal?

Some of the larger files available on the website may take some time to download, depending on the size of your file and the speed of your connection. The following provides an example of the different lengths of time (in minutes) it may take to download a document:

 File size  @ 28.8KBps @ 56 KBps @ 64 K (ISDN) @128 K (ISDN)
 250 KB 0:01:18 0:00:34 0:00:30 0:00:15
 500 KB 0:02:36 0:01:09 0:01:01 0:00:30
 750 KB 0:03:54 0:01:34 0:01:31 0:00:45
 1 MB 0:05:20 0:02:22 0:02:05 0:01:02

How do I save a document?

Internet browsers save documents in a variety of ways which can often confuse users. To guarantee saving a document into your computer you should:

PC users:

Right click on the link: a popup menu will appear. Scroll down that menu and click on 'Save Target As'. You will be then prompted to choose a folder within your computer to save the file to. To open the document, find the folder you saved it in and double click.

Macintosh users:

Instead of right clicking, hold down the mouse button and the menu will appear as above

Why doesn't my computer display the webpages properly?

This website has been designed to support as wide a range of browsers and operating systems as possible. However, for best results you will need Internet Explorer 4 or higher or Netscape Navigator 6 or higher. Due to the lack of support of cascading style sheets in Netscape 4.7, users will see pages unformatted but fully functional. Due to differing support of cascading style sheet attributes, a more simplified design and layout will be experienced by users of Internet Explorer 4 on PC and users of Internet Explorer 5 on Mac. Many browser suppliers upgrade for free.

The International Save the Children Alliance endeavours to make its websites compatible with all browsers. However, if you are using an older browser (a level 3.0 browser for instance), you may see inconsistencies in the presentation of pages.

It may help you to download a newer version of a browser to improve your general Internet experience.

The following are available to download for free:

The recommended minimum display settings at which to view the International Save the Children Alliance websites are 800 x 600. To change these settings, try the help files of your computer operating system.
