WHAT IS HAPPENING TO CHILDREN IN LEBANON

Children in Lebanon are being killed, injured and uprooted from their homes. 127 children have already lost their lives. It feels like danger is everywhere, and they can never be safe.

“Our worst nightmare is now becoming a reality. Children in Lebanon have felt crushing anxiety of a looming war since last October, and in the last few days their lives have been turned upside down, with densely populated neighbourhoods bombed. Monday was the deadliest day since last October,” said Jennifer Moorehead, Save the Children Lebanon Country Director.

At least 1,200,000 people, including 420,000 children have fled their homes as a result of the increasing insecurities in recent months. Any further escalation of hostilities will mean an unacceptable loss of human life. As always, children will bear the brunt of conflict.

Schools across the country have closed, affecting 1.5 million children. "Thinking of a home and what is has become, makes my cry. Sometimes I worry I won't be able to remember what it looked like." Samer, 13 years old, Southern Lebanon.

WHAT ARE WE DOING IN LEBANON TO SUPPORT CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES?

We have been working in Lebanon since 1953. Since October 2023, we have supported more than 111,400 people, including 47,400 children, who have been displaced by the escalation of violence. This includes displaced Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian children and families.

Currently we’re responding in 190 shelters in three area offices, 1. Central and South, 2. East and 3. North Lebanon. Phase 1 of the response (September/October 2024):

  • Providing essential items – like mattresses, blankets, pillows, bottled water and hygiene kits – to families staying in temporary shelters.
  • Providing water to families in shelters and food parcels to families outside shelters.
  • Setting up safe spaces for children to play and referring them for additional support if needed.

We stand ready to scale up our response to the escalating situation. But we need help to do this. With additional funds, we plan to:

  1. Establishing child-friendly spaces to provide safe environments for children, including the distribution of recreational materials and referrals for case management where needed.
  2. Providing critical support to collective shelters, ensuring they are equipped to meet the needs of displaced families by offering essential WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) services and conducting rehabilitation to improve living conditions.
  3. Implementing Education in Emergencies and Child Protection in Emergencies activities to ensure children continue to learn and remain protected despite the challenging circumstances.
  4. Delivering cash assistance to internally displaced persons (IDPs) residing outside collective shelters to help them meet their basic needs.
  5. Offering individualized case management for particularly vulnerable children who require tailored support and services.
  6. Providing mental health support to help children cope with the psychological impact of the ongoing crisis

As violence escalates in the region, the need for support has never been more urgent. The ongoing crisis is threatening the lives of countless children and families in Lebanon, Gaza and across the region leaving them in desperate need of assistance.

Please donate today to the Children’s Emergency Fund to help us respond to this escalating crisis and protect the most vulnerable children in Lebanon, Gaza and living in conflict around the world.
