In October 2024, when the heavy down pour of rain caused the river to overflow in Glayan Town, Rivercess County and parts of Bong County, several residents including women, children and the elderly were affected thus leaving properties destroyed and others homeless. Many of those affected by the flood, were devastated and had no hope that anyone or organization would have come to their rescue.

Fortunately for them, Save the Children Liberia initiated an emergency response under its Humanitarian Fund to help victims of the flood in the two counties.

During the distribution in Oldpa Village where flood-affected households from Glayan Town in Rivercess County had gathered to receive their supplies of food items, education and hygiene kits, beneficiaries praised Save the Children Liberia for the intervention.

In the words of Beatrice Kollie, 27, a mother of one child “Save the Children has brought relief to us bringing food and school materials for our children. Thank you, Save the Children. Your intervention was timely.”

She explained “The school kits will help us because my 7-years-old daughter is not in school. The flood destroyed all our things in Galyan Town. Some of our neighbours are displaced while I am residing with friends who were not affected by the flood.” She expressed gratitude to Save the Children for thinking about those affected by the flood disaster.

In Bong County where the distribution of emergency supplies were launched on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, Madam Loleyah Hawa Norris, Superintendent of Bong County, expressed appreciation to Save the Children and other organizations for the support.

On behalf of Save the Children, Madam Zinnah D. Cargeor, Safety and Security Focal Point, who is also the Humanitarian lead, stressed that the organization is committed to supporting the most vulnerable especially women and children affected by these kinds of situations.

The humanitarian intervention by Save the Children Liberia was done in partnership with the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA).
