Burundi

Save the Children (SC) Burundi Office operates under Rwanda and Burundi Country Office.  Burundi office reopened (after it was closed in 2004) in 2016 in the aftermath of the 2015 crisis.

The main office is in Bujumbura and 3 field offices in Ruyigi, Muyinga and Makamba Provinces. SC implement both Humanitarian and Development programmes in Health and Nutrition, Child Rights and Protection.

1.   Humanitarian response includes Refugees and Returnees’ support (Protection) as well as response to flooding and internal displacement (Protection and Health).

For refugee and returnee programmes, Save the Children implements Child Protection (CP) programmes, prevention and response to Sexual and Gender-based Violence (SGBV), support to Persons with Specific Needs (PSN) and women empowerment initiatives in refugee camps and transit centres for asylum seekers and Burundian returnees. 

In collaboration with the Ministry of Health through the Health Emergency Operations Centre, Save the Children has been implementing different anticipatory actions and preparedness for populations affected by floods and cholera in Gatumba district of Bujumbura Province.  

2. Development programmes include Protection, Health and Nutrition and Child rights Governance.  Save the Children is active in 21 communes of Ngozi, Muyinga, Cankuzo and Ruyingi Provinces on prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse as well as sexual harassment. Other focus areas aim to strengthen Burundian CSOs for the realisation of children's rights and their protection in ten communes of Bujumbura, Gitega and Muyinga Provinces. 

Save the Children is also piloting actions and modules on MHPSS-ECD in five host communities of refugee camps on prevention and response to intergenerational trauma.
