Health & Nutrition
For over 30 years, Save the Children has worked to improve the quality of health services and increase mothers’ and children’s access to healthcare. As one of the largest international organizations supporting the health sector in Somalia, at our core Save the Children is committed to the delivery of the Essential Package of Health Services (EPHS) in partnership with the
Ministry of Health. We focus on maternal, new-born and child health and nutrition services, reproductive health services, and prevention and control of communicable diseases, through both static and outreach health services staffed by a network of qualified health workers and community volunteers. We are striving to reach hard-to- reach communities through the scale up of Integrated Community Case Management (ICCM). Save the Children works closely with the Ministry of Health in capacity building and system strengthening, as well supports sector coordination as the Co-Lead of the Health Cluster in Somalia with World Health Organization.
Malnutrition (CMAM) which combines strong preventive and curative interventions, including: mass screening of children under five and referrals by a network of Community Nutrition Volunteers; the provision of Stabilization Centers for Severe Cases with medical complications, Outpatient Therapeutic Programs (OTP) for Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM), and Therapeutic Supplementary Feeding Programs (TSFP) for Moderate Acute Malnutrition; as well as the provision of micro- nutrient supplements and extensive engagement with mothers and fathers on positive Infant & Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices.
WASH
Save the Children’s WASH programming integrates water, sanitation, and hygiene services across all areas of its work, ensuring a holistic impact on children's health and wellbeing. We provide clean water and safe sanitation facilities in health and nutrition sites, schools, and child-friendly spaces, addressing the immediate and long-term needs of children and their communities.
To support vulnerable populations affected by droughts, floods, and displacement, we rehabilitate and construct water sources, provide emergency water trucking, build and repair latrines, and distribute hygiene kits. Additionally, we work with families and communities to raise awareness about good hygiene practices, reducing the spread of waterborne diseases.
