April 15th 2024 marked one year since violent conflict broke out in the capital of Sudan that has since triggered widespread violence and instability across the country and the broader region. Today 14 million children in Sudan need support to overcome the horrifying impacts of this conflict. Sudan is also facing one of the world’s worst hunger crises. Children, like 2 year-old Sara, who manage to survive the bombs and bullets are at risk of dying from starvation and disease instead.

YOUR $72 GIFT COULD PROVIDE FOOD FOR A MONTH TO A DISPLACED FAMILY LIKE SARA'S.

Children and their families are in desperate need. Malnutrition rates in children under five are among the highest in the world in Sudan. 3.7 million children are facing acute malnutrition. Without treatment, malnutrition can have long-term implications on children’s health and development, or even kill. 222,000 severely malnourished children are likely to die in the coming months if their nutritional and health needs remain unmet.

Rana* 27, holds her daughter Sara*

Ismael*, 13, fled his home in Sudan when the violence intensified, along with his parents and four siblings. His mother, Rana*, 27, was at the market when the clashes began and she struggled to get home, but eventually made it back to her family by bus and running on foot. She describes how one of her sons was terrified that she was missing and sobbed with relief when she returned. The family fled their home on a tuktuk and managed to find more fuel for their journey along the way, despite the chaos. They made it to a centre for displaced families, where they are now staying. Rana says that they were all exhausted and sick when they arrived and she was very concerned about her children’s mental health. Ismael and his siblings are attending a Save the Children Child Friendly Space within the centre, and his mother describes how important it is for them to have the toys and balls to play with to keep them relaxed during this stressful time. Rana has also received essential supplies for her family such as water and a dignity kit.
