What we do

Despite Kenya's progress in addressing key issues affecting children, substantial gaps remain with large disparities between the deprived Northern counties and more affluent counties. The Government has implemented policies aimed at improving education, healthcare, and social protection but climate change poses an increasing threat especially in the Northern Arid and Semi-arid Lands, exacerbating food insecurity and nutrition challenges for vulnerable children. Economic inequalities continue to hinder equitable access to essential services, with children in deprived communities suffering the most.

Save the Children targets the most vulnerable and marginalized groups in Kenya, focusing on areas such as the Northern Arid and Semi-Arid Lands, refugee camps, and informal settlements. We prioritize marginalized groups such as girls and children with disabilities, focusing on inclusive programming for children. We have an operational presence in counties with the highest number of deprived children: Nairobi, Dadaab, Garissa, Mandera, Samburu, Turkana, Wajir, Bungoma, Baringo, Kajiado, Embu, Kisumu, Kakamega, Kitui and in Madagascar)

Our Belief is every child deserves a future and their lives, voices and future potential should be fiercely protected at all costs.

Our Vision is a world in which every child attains the right to survival, protection, development and participation.

Our Mission is to inspire breakthroughs in the way the world treats children and to achieve immediate and lasting change in their lives.

Save the Children in Kenya currently implements programmes in the following areas:

Awale, in an orange T-shirt, 4, Kowsar, 3, and Abdi, plays with his siblings at home

Kowsar, 3, Awale, 4, Abdi, one-month-old, and three other siblings live with their mother, Amina, 25, in a remote village in Garissa County. Amina depends on her goats to feed her children, including Kowsar and Awale, but in the current season of drought, she is struggling to feed them. Awale became ill with Moderate Acute Malnutrition, followed by Kowsar, who had Severe Acute Malnutrition, and both were treated by Save the Children. The family have also received a cash transfer so they can buy nutritious food.
